Employee benefits is something that has been very important to me lately. I’ve worked for my employer for almost 5 years. Recently I was told that I’d have to take two days without pay due to me not having enough sick/vacation time to cover the time I was in the hospital and home sick. I can’t even begin to explain how upset I was. I’ve spent many a nights working late, sometimes til 2 a.m., to help meet deadlines. Rewards come in the form of modest bonuses. Modest as they were I appreciated them and thought I was appreciated as well, but having to take leave without pay (LWOP) definitely made me reconsider that.
Around the same time that I found out about LWOP, a friend of mine interviewed at a company called O Power and she told me to look at their benefits. Immediately after looking at their benefits, I went to see what positions they were hiring for. Their benefits seemed very employee-friendly and I definitely wanted to be a part of a company like that.
- Casual work environment – jeans and shorts allowed
- Pantry stocked full of snacks and food
- Free wi-fi
- Your choice of a Mac or PC
- Scooters and a ping-pong table
- Free weekly massages
- $100 monthly commuter benefit (SUPER bonus to me because living in the Washington, DC area, we have the worst traffic in the country)
Overall it sounds like a fun environment overall. I sent O Power’s web link to another girlfriend of mine because I knew she was looking for a new job and after reading the benefits she says “This sounds fake. This can’t be real.” I was shocked. SERIOUSLY? I know the benefits are good, but is it so hard to believe that a company actually wants to create a great working environment and keep their employees happy?
So with employee benefits fresh on my mind, I was very surprised to hear about the new human resources plan that Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer introduced this week. The new plan requires all Yahoo employees who work remotely to relocate to company offices. If employees fail to comply, they will lose their jobs. If I was a Yahoo employee who worked from home, I would be HOT.
I read the comments about the Yahoo news on AllThingsD and was inspired to write this post. One of my favorite comments was this one below:
