A couple of my girlfriends and I try to check out different restaurant in DC whenever our schedules allow. This past Friday, we met up at RPM Italian DC. If you aren’t familiar with RPM Italian, I’m sure you’re familiar with a couple of its owners, celebrity couple Bill and Guiliana (Depandi) Rancic (I love them).
I was super excited to finally be eating RPM Italian because I had heard great things about the place. And I actually had to schedule our reservation three weeks in advance just to get our desired time. However, on my way to work Friday morning, I realized I had left my camera at home. I was already running late and couldn’t turn around. I spent the first half of the morning trying to figure out how I could get my camera, so I could capture the goodness at RPM. I never figured it out, so all the pictures you will see are on the iPhone. I’m sure my girls are probably happy that I did not have my Canon with me because I probably would have embarrassed them with my bright flash, trying to capture everything. But hey, a blogger gotta do, what a blogger gotta do.
We made it to RPM Italian during their happy hour (4-6 pm) Friday night. As we walk in and I’m instantly impressed by the stylish decor and also the super stylish servers who were wearing crisp white dinner jackets. I was loving the jackets and the cute waiter I spotted with the beard. Hello! A girl loves good eye candy wherever she goes.
I had already looked at the menu before I came and had decided on the Spritz and Giggles cocktail because who doesn’t love a drink with Prosecco. Not to mention, their happy hour cocktails were half off. My drink was pretty good; I sipped it slow and enjoyed it, rather than drinking it down really quickly.
And one of my girls ordered the Kentucky Spritz since she’s more of a dark liquor fan. However, the Kentucky Spritz was a little too tart for her.
My eyes lit up when I saw fried mozzarella on the menu because who doesn’t love warm cheese that oozes out of a fried crust. RPM Italian does fried mozzarella in the form of little balls. Verdict: It’s hard to mess up fried cheese. The balls were good, but not memorable.
The girls ordered the Cremini Mushroom Pizzette. Verdict: I really liked this thin crust pizza that was filled with lots of flavor. This girl loves flavor!
We also ordered Proscuitto Involtini, which was basically warm cheese wrapped in prosciutto. Can you say YUMMY? And Fried olives. Who knew frying olives would be so good? We really liked these. I enjoyed them so much that as I was grocery shopping on Sunday at Aldi, I eyed the mini fryer they had on sale like, “Hmm maybe I can fry some olives with this”.
Finally around 6:30, we moved into one of the main dining rooms to eat dinner. As soon as we sat down, one of my girls likened the seating arrangement to that of Cheesecake Factory (think small tables super close together). RPM Italian did have some circular booths as well that seemed very cozy.
As soon as we are seated, I knew I wanted to order the Truffled Garlic Bread. I had seen pictures of this bread on Yelp and my mouth instantly watered. Verdict: This bread was definitely one of my favorites for the night. It was a little bit too much oil soaked in the bread, but the flavor was on point. I had exercise self-control to stop myself from eating it all.
Two of us decided on the Spicy King Crab pasta. I was a little leery at first because I never had spaghetti nero before, but I wanted to be a little adventurous. Verdict: RPM is generous with the crab meat (thankfully). This dish has a little kick of spice, not too much, but it was missing something. Overall I enjoyed it, but next time I think I’ll be trying the Lobster Fra Diavolo.
I also ordered a side of Brussel sprouts and pancetta. I love shaved brussel sprouts and this side dish did not disappoint. When I finished the leftovers Saturday morning, I was actually disappointed I didn’t have more to eat.
The best dish of the whole night actually went to a side dish of roasted mushrooms. I’m all about flavor and these mushrooms hit the mark. These mushrooms were seasoned and roasted so well, I was tempted to place an order to-go. They were THAT good. (Please don’t judge my pictures)
One of the girls ordered the Chicken Parmesan. Since the dish comes with a protein only, she ordered a side of pasta to go with the chicken. Verdict: If your mom makes a good chicken parmesan, then there’s no reason to order it at RPM Italian. The dish was nothing special and nothing to write home about.
Although we were partially stuffed and couldn’t finish our meals, the girls still decided to order dessert. They opted for the RPM Cheesecake and Bill’s Chocolate Budino. I did not taste either dessert, but I can tell you that the girls definitely enjoyed the dessert. #CleanPlates
So if you’re curious about RPM Italian DC, here’s what you should know:
Do go for the sexy ambiance and great service. Order the fried olives and Prosciutto Involtini and the truffle garlic bread for the table to share. Don’t order the Italian favorites like Chicken Parm and expect something amazing. If your mom is a great cook, she can probably do better. But definitely, DO your taste buds a favor and order the mushrooms. If you remember nothing else, “ORDER THE MUSHROOMS”.
