Working long hours on show site can be very exhausting, so having a good restaurant or two in your hotel, comes in very handy. Thankfully the Hyatt Regency Dallas had several dining options, so one night my co-workers and I decided to check out Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck. I’d seen lines at the hostess desk for the restaurant, so I hopped on my trusty Open Table app and made a quick reservation for three.
Thirty minutes later, we walked up to the hostess desk and were greeted by the most friendly and knowledgeable host. He gave us a little history on the restaurant and the city of Dallas, then ushered us to the elevator. Five Sixty sits 560 feet atop the Reunion Tower and offers a 360-degree view of the Dallas skyline. So if you’re afraid of heights, you might want to skip this restaurant. But if you love a great view, then you will truly enjoy Five Sixty. The restaurant slowly rotates 360-degrees every hour, so you get a good look at Dallas.
In fact, I had to get up and approach the manager and ask him if a server could stop by our table. I hate when I have to search for a server. Eventually our server arrived and took our drink orders. We decided to skip drinks and just try a bunch of appetizers and sushi. The server who brought our food to the table ended up being a lot friendlier than our actual server and made the meal a little more enjoyable.
The server suggested we try their award winning Fujipeno Roll, made of tempura jalapeño, tempura shrimp, tuna, sweet & sour chili sauce and avocado. We also ordered Tempura Shrimp and Crab Roll and the Crispy Tempura Dynamite Roll. VERDICT: The Fujipeno Roll was AMAZING. Honestly, this was thee best roll I have EVER had. The shrimp and crab roll and dynamite roll were good, but hands down, the Fujjipeno Roll outshined them both. The tempura shrimp, tuna and jalapeño paired with the sweet and sour chili sauce was BOMB. I wanted to eat the whole roll myself, but I had to share.
After we finished our rolls, we ordered the Crystal Chive Dumplings. The dumplings were filled with shrimp, king crab and pork belly and topped with Szechaun chili sauce. VERDICT: not my favorite. I probably wouldn’t order them again.
The Tamarind Glazed Baby Back Ribs were very flavorful and tender.
I was excited to try the Crispy Shrimp and Lobster Spring Rolls (you know how I feel about seafood) and they were tasty, but not memorable. We also ordered the “Salt & Pepper” Calamari with Jalapeño and a pickled ginger vinaigrette. My favorite part of this dish was honestly the fried jalapeño. All three of us were full by the time we finished the rolls and appetizers and decided to skip dessert.
I know you’re probably wondering why I’m recommending this restaurant if the appetizers were just okay and the service was mediocre? Two reasons: the ambiance and view is unmatched and you have to try the Fujipeno Roll. If you do nothing else but order a couple cocktails and the fujipeno roll, you will thank me. I promise the view and roll alone are worth the trip to Five Sixty!
Tip: If you’re staying at the Hyatt, don’t count on charging your bill to your room. Even though the restaurant is connected to the hotel, they don’t have the ability to charge your meal to your room.
