I was having a conversation this weekend with some of my male coworkers about being rich and how we would spend our money. One guy mentioned that a friend of his plays in the NBA and goes out and will spend $1 million in one night on partying and liquor. He then went on to say if he made millions each year, he would do the same. I told him that I would never waste that much money on partying and spending money like that isn’t smart. It’s the fastest way to wind up broke in a few years.
Many people don’t realize that there’s a difference between being rich and being wealthy. Being rich is about having a lot of money, that isn’t always sustainable. I see a lot of people these days throwing around the word “rich”. So many people want to be rich and monetize everything in their life. But I’m not one of those people. I don’t want to be rich. I’d rather be wealthy because it’s not just about money.
Being wealthy is about living a great life and having the freedom to do whatever you want. Being wealthy is about choices and decisions. Sometimes those chooses involve not going out on a crazy shopping spree because I have decided that investing in myself or my business is more important. While there are many “get rich schemes”, the same can’t be said for “getting wealthy”. Why? Because wealth takes time to develop. You have to develop not only your lifestyle and investments, but also your knowledge to change mindset. Being rich can be temporary, here today and gone tomorrow. Having knowledge is wealth because even if you lose money, you will always have the know-how to get it back.
I recently read an article that stated an entrepreneur is “An individual that creates a business with the purpose of altering their personal lifestyle and not for the sole purpose of making profits. A lifestyle entrepreneur focuses more on the life rewards provided to people that enjoy and have a passion for what they are doing. There is a possibility that the business will do particularity well since the individual has a passion for what he/she is doing.”
Passion is what wakes me up in the morning. It motivates me to be creative. Crossing off tasks on a checklist. Taking steps that will bring me closer to my goals and dreams. It’s not just about making money. Sure I would love my creative designs and hard work to bring in a nice money flow, but it’s also about inspiring others. So what motivates you? Is it the desire to be rich? Or to be wealthy? To enjoy temporary happiness? Or a lifetime of wisdom and freedom?
And as I always say, “Don’t stop! Keep going.”
Surround yourself around people who inspire you. People who encourage you to be better and people who push you past your comfort zone.
And lastly, your thoughts are everything. Your feelings are magnetic. Your imagination should be endless.
Have a great Monday and a great week! And think about whether your actions will make you rich or wealthy.
