Can we all just admit that time is flying by? We’re almost two weeks into February. How crazy is that? It seems like we were just bringing in the new year a couple of weeks ago and now, in just a couple of weeks, March will be here. I’ve been super busy since January 1 and promised to fill you in on all that I’ve been doing.
For over a year now, I’ve been wanting to open another business after I closed down my online jewelry boutique. I created this great concept/business called Hyi Society with my business partner, in which we would create t-shirts, mugs, etc. with fun and inspirational phrases. This brand would kind of be an extension of my Motivation Monday posts. It was and still is important for me to inspire people and motivate them to never give up on their dreams.
To prep for the launch of Hyi Society, I worked on design ideas, a logo and even created social media accounts. However, fear took over me mentality and prevented me from officially starting this business. Eventually, I started to focus on other things, my business partner was busy traveling the world for work and so Hyi Society just took the backseat in our lives. There were times when I would see something in everyday life that would spark my creative juices. I would make notes in my phone about the idea and just keep it moving.
At some point in 2016, I joined this Facebook group called Brand, Build + Launch with Arsha Jones (BBL). If you aren’t familiar with Arsha, she’s the brains behind brands like Tees in the Trap and Capital City Mambo Sauce. Tees in the Trap has some amazing designs that I love and Mambo Sauce is an integral part of DC culture. The BBL group is AMAZING. The group is made up of business owners from various different industries all about encouraging and helping one another. I saw so many great ideas and tips come from this group. Many entrepreneurs shared their struggles, as well as their wins.
The more I tuned into this group, the more I found myself inspired and motivated. I wanted to become one of these business owners that having great wins and successes with my work. So I made a secret goal to myself: 2017 was going to be my year to refocus on my business and my business dreams. I came up with a couple fresh ideas for my business and January 1, 2017, I purchased 6 new URLs. Although I am still developing ideas for these URLs, I felt empowered purchasing them. I relaunched my the Hyi Society social media Facebook and Instagram pages and worked on the website. Finally, late last month, I officially launched the Hyi Society online store.
This project has definitely been a labor of love and Hyi Society is something I really believe in and I know it will be great. A few of my favorite designs are the Digital Hustler t-shirt and the Blessed with Melanin t-shirt (shameless plug).
Throughout the past year, I’ve learned a couple of things about fear and dreams. Fear can be dangerous if we allow it to have power over our mindset. Fear can block our own personal progress. The funny thing about fear is that we often worry about things that we have dreamt up in our own heads. That’s not to say that some of these things we worry about don’t exist, but the more we dwell on them, the worse our fear can become.
Fear tells us to stop, whereas creativity tells us to Go! Grow. Inspire. Create. Dream. Dreams don’t work us you do!
Courage is needed to overcome fear. Strength is necessary to combat fear and push past it. You’ll never get to what you deserve, unless you actively choose it. Choose to go after your goals and dreams. Choose to not let fear stop you.
Of course, the fear doesn’t just instantly disappear. It’s still there, but I’ve taken back control and now the fear has become smaller in my head. My desire to share and create has become stronger than my fear.
I give total credit to the Brand, Build and Launch group for encourage me. If it wasn’t for seeing other entrepreneurs struggle, but keep going or sharing their success, I might still be holding onto the idea of Hyi Society, but never launching it.
So what fear are you holding onto? Might be time to finally take control and take power over that fear.
